Although Google I/O 2025 isn’t scheduled until May 20–21, early leaks have already begun to reveal some of the tech giant’s upcoming plans. As always, the annual event is expected to draw widespread attention across the digital world, with showcases of the latest Android version and Google’s newest innovations.

While artificial intelligence is likely to be a central focus again this year—particularly with the anticipated advancements in Google Gemini following the success of version 2.5—another development could generate just as much buzz.

A New Alternative to Pinterest in the Works?

Despite maintaining a relatively low media profile, Pinterest continues to command a massive user base. With 533 million active users each month, according to the platform itself, and an impressive engagement rate, Pinterest remains unrivalled in its niche.

That may be about to change. Google is reportedly preparing to enter the scene with its own alternative. According to journalist Erin Woo from The Information, the company is expected to unveil this new product during next week’s Google I/O conference.

The tool, as described in Woo’s report, could resemble Cosmos—an app designed for creating and sharing lists with friends and family. While Google has yet to confirm or deny the report, all signs point to the project being actively developed.

New Strategy to Bolster Google’s Ad Revenue

Even though the year is far from over, 2025 is already shaping up to be a turning point for Google. The company has long dominated the tech landscape with flagship products like its search engine, Google Maps, and the Chrome browser.

However, ongoing antitrust proceedings—stemming from a case launched in 2020 that accuses Google of monopolising the search market—are casting a shadow over its operations. Current courtroom hearings could potentially threaten Google’s grip on web browsing, with even Chrome’s future being questioned.

Compounding the pressure is the surge in AI-powered platforms, particularly those developed by OpenAI, such as ChatGPT. Google is steadily losing market share as users increasingly turn to these alternatives.

Despite still holding a commanding lead—recording 136 billion visits per month according to recent data from Visual Capitalist and SEMrush—Google is clearly under pressure to diversify. A Pinterest-style tool could provide not only a fresh user engagement channel but also a new avenue for targeted advertising revenue.
