Nintendo has officially unveiled Mario Kart World, the latest evolution of its iconic racing franchise, during a special Mario Kart World Direct presentation. The game is set to launch exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5 and promises the most significant transformation in the series’ history.
The standout innovation is its fully connected open world. Instead of navigating isolated tracks, players will explore an expansive, interconnected continent. Racers can roam freely between race locations, discover hidden areas, and interact with dynamic environments. A real-time weather system and a day-night cycle add even more variety to the experience, offering changing conditions as players drive across diverse landscapes.
Nintendo is also raising the bar technically. For the first time, up to 24 players can compete online in real time. A new power jump mechanic has been introduced, allowing players to grind along rails and perform wall jumps in creative combinations. Additionally, the new GameChat feature supports voice communication — available for free until March 2026, after which it will require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
Another standout feature is CameraPlay. With a separately sold Nintendo Switch 2 camera or any compatible USB-C camera, players’ faces will appear next to their characters during races. This function supports up to four players in local multiplayer, making split-screen sessions more personal and immersive.
Beyond traditional modes like Grand Prix and Time Trial, Mario Kart World introduces fresh gameplay experiences. In Knockout Tour, players embark on a cross-continental rally, aiming to hit a series of checkpoints without pause. Those falling too far behind will be eliminated, raising the stakes with every leg of the journey. Fan-favorite Battle Mode also makes its return with new arenas and rules.
The item system is receiving a major refresh as well. New additions include the Coin Shell, which releases speed-boosting coins upon impact, and Kamek’s Magic, which can transform rivals into random objects. The further a racer is behind, the greater the likelihood of receiving powerful comeback items — staying true to the franchise’s accessible, high-stakes fun.
With these sweeping changes, Mario Kart World represents more than just another installment — it’s a bold reimagining of a beloved series that promises to bring both longtime fans and new players along for the ride.
