Abkhazian doctors will no longer have to make guesses
16/03/2010 10:47

After renovation in one of the central hospitals of Sukhumi, department of neurology started to operate again. New equipment will help doctors to work more efficiently, reports "Ekho Kavkaza".

"Neurological resuscitation is possible for the first time in Abkhazia. We did not have this before. We had an intensive care unit, where we used to keep the seriously ill, but now we have full neurological resuscitation" - said head of department of neurology of the 2nd city hospital Irina Ashuba.

According to doctors, the new equipment resolves many of their usual problems. There is no more prolonged time of diagnosis, and although in itself this equipment does not help heal the sick, the most important thing is that now doctors can afford not to make guesses about what is wrong with a patient.

"It is easier to diagnose a disease, because we have the new equipment. We have monitors for each patient in the intensive care unit. We have deployed five beds in intensive care unit. And a diagnosis can be made more quickly. We used to do this by making guesses. Now we have everything our own and we can make a diagnosis in just one day "says neurologist Liana Alania.

However, problems are still in abundance. CT scan allows a rapid diagnosis of health, but as of now it is only in a military hospital in Agudzera. The situation in Abkhazian healthcare is improving but it's still way to go to full equipment of hospitals and clinics with modern technology.
