25/01/2012 13:43

Ancient fresco of the first king of united Georgia Bagrat III was destroyed by representatives of the Russian company Tecktonik that was attracted by self-proclaimed head of the Sukhumi-Pitsunda Diocese Vissarion Aplia for illegitimate "restoration" of the Bedia Monastery in occupied Abkhazia. Historian Lia Akhaladze that worked on the restoration of the Bedia Monastery in 1989 told about this.

"Murals of Bagrat III, which we had protected for centuries, no longer exist - Akhaladze said. - They said that the wall on which there was the fresco was crumbling, and they scraped it. In reality, the wall with the fresco was not damaged. Now there are neither Georgian inscriptions, nor Georgian alphabet Asomtavruli left inside the church.

The historian also noted that Russia's "restorers" plan to erect a new dome over the Georgian church of the tenth century. As Akhaladze said, "Considering that over the Ilori church they built a dome, characteristic of the Russian churches, and here, probably, they will build a similar one."
