Ankvab sees no prospects in restoration of railway movement through Abkhazia

The leader of the occupied Abkhazia Alexander Ankvab called futile the question of restoration of railway movement through Abkhazia.

As we know, during his visit to Armenia Prime Minister of Georgia Bidzina Ivanishvili said at a joint press conference with his Armenian counterpart Tigran Sargsyan in Yerevan that Tbilisi is ready to discuss possibility of restoration of the railway movement in Abkhazia, which was interrupted by the conflict of 1992-1993, after settlement of relations with Russia.

As the leader of the occupied Abkhazia stated at a news conference in Sukhumi, no one approached the Abkhazian leadership to discuss the issue. According to him, if there are any specific proposals, they should become a subject of collective discussion.

The "president" said that he can understand interest of "other countries" in the restoration of railway movement through Abkhazia, but he has no idea how it can be implemented. "As I can recall in the Soviet time the Abkhazian section of the Transcaucasian railway carried 24 return freight trains and 14 return passenger trains. The branch ran at its full capacity. Around 13 - 15% of goods heading to the South Caucasus was carried through it. I cannot answer what are capabilities today,"- added Ankvab.
